FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For California (and other states) it is the Secretary of State.  Notaries in California are held to some of the highest notarial standards in the United States.  Notaries are sworn to uphold the law, as found in the Business and Professions Code

There is a required amount of education to complete prior to applying to take a 2-3 hour exam.  The exam is administered by proctors from the Secretary of State and performed under a closed-book policy.

There are subjects a notary must know and practice. Types of notarization include Notarial Certificates. Most certificates consist of an ‘Acknowledgment’ or ‘Jurat’. It is up to the SIGNER to choose, not the notary. A duplicate Power of Attorney is another certificate.

A notary is required to properly identify the signer and check the signature on the current respective ID as follows:

  • Any state or federal issued ID
  • 52 states (of the USA) drivers licenses are recognized, as well as those from Mexico and Canada.
  • California ID
  • California Senior ID
  • Passport (USA stamped)
  • Consular ID (require a photo, description, and signature)
  • Tribal Cards
  • Booking Number Cards
  • School ID (school needs to be recognized as federal or state entity)
  • The signer is personally known to the notary
  • On the oath of a credible witness who is personally known to the signer

Did You Know?…
A notary works throughout our State, not just near his/her residence.

Please be sure to contact Byers Best Mobile Notary with all of your notary needs.  Sheila will be able to answer any further questions you may have.

An Apostille is a certificate that authenticates the origin of a document.

Byers Best Mobile Notary can assist you in the process.  We have experience going to the California Secretary of State’s office the same day as notarization.  For a less cost, the paperwork can be mailed (certified), and Byers Best Mobile Notary can assist in the formulation of the cover letter and handle mailing, as requested.
